Wood Salt and Pepper Shakers - Purpleheart, Hand-Turned

This was a fun project - turning wood salt and pepper shakers from Purpleheart. This was my first set, and I admit, a little mismatched, but that was somewhat deliberate - I was just having fun. But it does show the potential. The shapes I can make are limited only by the size of wood our imagination, and my craftiness. All sorts of wood are available, and I plan to post a lot more of these in the future.

Purpleheart, also sometimes called amaranth or violet wood, comes from several species of tropical trees native to Central and South America. The heartwood is a light purple when cut, and darkens upon exposure to sunlight, reaching first a darker purple and eventually a brown with a purple cast. It is hard and strong, and takes attention when turning, requiring sharp tools, gentle cuts, and a LOT of sanding.

Shakers shown are about 2" in diameter and 3-1/2" high. Price as shown: $40.00
