Purpleheart Wood Bowl - Practical Art

Purpleheart is probably the most popular bowl wood among my customers. Also sometimes called amaranth or violet wood, Purpleheart comes from several species of tropical trees native to Central and South America. The heartwood is a light purple when cut, and darkens upon exposure to sunlight, reaching first a darker purple and eventually a brown with a purple cast. It is hard and strong, and takes attention when turning, requiring sharp tools, gentle cuts, and patient sanding. The results are worth it though. If you have a wood bowl like this, you know yourself the pleasure of using this piece of art in every day life - it really does enrich your quality of life. Treat yourself to one today - 7"x2". Zebrawood Sushi Hangiri

This spectacular flat-bottomed bowl, styled as a Sushi Hangiri, is made from African Zebrawood. Also called Zebrano, African zebrawood trees can reach in excess of 150'. Diameters commonly measure between 5' and 7'. Heartwood is light golden-yellow with streaks and veining of dark chocolate brown. Dries slowly, and tends to surface check and end-split during seasoning. Coarse texture and interlocked grain must be surfaced wih care. The necessary care was provided on this bowl. Finished with mineral oil and beeswax, for a food-safe finish, it is ready for use, as well as display.

7"x4" Ambrosia Maple Bowl

Ambrosia Maple is one of my favorite woods to work with - the stain patterns, the texture, the color - it's always a treat. This piece isn't as spectacular as I'm used to. Though still an attractive bowl, it didn't get as much of the stains as I would like. I also experimented with form a little, with results that I have mixed feelings about. I thought about not posting it, but who knows, maybe somebody out there will like it more than I do and it can find a happier home. As it is, I'll send it to you for the replacement cost of the wood this time - $31.50 plus shipping. Email me if you'd like it. Size: 7"x4"
